The Salvation Army runs more than 300 charity shops and 3,800 clothing bins around the UK and Republic of Ireland which will be pleased to accept unwanted clothing, bric-a-brac, books, games, CDs, DVDs, and kitchenware. Some stores will also accept furniture

Income from donated goods is extremely important to support local Salvation Army community services, such as support facilities for older people and families, as well as national programmes that include 60 residential centres for homeless people, 17 elderly care homes, 6 detox centres, 5 family centres and a Family Tracing Service

More than 60 charity shops in England and Scotland and 3,800 clothing banks in the UK are run by The Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (Registered Company no.2605817) a textile recycling operation, which donates its profits to The Salvation Army. The location of your nearest SATCoL clothing collection bank can be found by visiting www.wear2bank.com and entering your postcode or by telephoning the helpdesk on 0845 4581999

Drop off your donation to your nearest charity shop during opening times, though please call first to check before bringing in any large items or electrical appliances which may need testing before they can be accepted

If you have any old or unwanted mobile phones The Salvation Army's International Development department can use them to improve the lives of people living in poverty. For instance, it only takes three mobile phones to enable The Salvation Army to provide a family with clean water for life. Send your phones to The Salvation Army, Freepost London 16281, Lonon WC1N 3BR or call 020 7367 4777, email: id@salvationarmy.org.uk or click here for more information about SALVageID scheme

By making sure cast-offs are reused or recycled you can also help protect the environment as reusing goods such as textiles and books prevents them from being sent to landfill. Donating to UK charity shops helps to reduce CO2 emissions by about 2.5 million tonnes a year, while charity shops reuse and recycle over 250,000 tonnes of textiles each year
