Match funding for Dereham Baptists’ debt centre

The Christians Against Poverty Debt Centre in Dereham, run in conjunction with Dereham Baptist Church, has been selected by the Aviva Community Fund for their match-funding, to further their work with those in the community who are struggling with debts

The Debt Centre has been active in the community this year, attending a community event at Dereham library, running a money coaching course in the Green Pastures Community Hub, and enjoying a free hot meal the Love Dereham Community Lunch

The free CAP Money Coaching courses are central to what they do, and the Aviva match-funding means that all donations received until 18 May 2024 will be doubled (up to £250 per household), which will enable their vital work in the community to continue

Catherine Weatherill, Community Links Coordinator at Dereham Debt Centre, said, “Many people don’t think they’re entitled to claim benefits, but a huge number of individuals who've used the benefit calculator on CAP's website have collectively found more than £100 million of additional annual income over the past year. We would like everyone living in Dereham and the surrounding villages to know that there is free debt help available - they don’t need to suffer in silence”

The Dereham Debt Centre newsletter explains the four main reasons for debt and how they can be tackled. These are low incomes, unexpected circumstances, physical and mental health struggles, and needing of budgeting support. The debt centre coaches are trained to advise on all these issues
